Six Days of Celebrations | A 40th Birthday in Scotland
Some birthdays deserve more than just one day of celebrations, and this particular 40th birthday was certainly one of them!
Travelling from New York, our client brought together 28 friends and family members from around the world for six wonderful days in Scotland. With everyone staying at the beautiful Stucktaymore overlooking Loch Tay, the week was filled with memorable experiences, wonderful food, Scottish traditions and, most importantly, plenty of opportunities to spend time together.
I was delighted to be invited along to photograph the celebrations, capturing everything from the grandeur of the Royal Yacht Britannia to the laughter and friendly competition of the Highland Games. It was a fantastic opportunity to document the whole experience as it unfolded, photographing the little moments, the friendships and the atmosphere that made the week so special.
An Exclusive Evening Aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia
The celebrations began in Edinburgh with a very special evening aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.
With exclusive use of the yacht, guests were treated to a private tour, giving everyone the opportunity to explore this remarkable piece of royal history before gathering for a drinks reception.
A pianist provided live music as everyone enjoyed their drinks, caught up with friends and soaked up the atmosphere of such an extraordinary setting. It was a wonderful way to begin the celebrations, with everyone coming together for the first of six memorable days.
Private dining followed, with the yacht providing a wonderfully distinctive backdrop for the occasion.
But the evening still had one more surprise.
After dinner, guests were treated to a performance by a pipe band, arranged exclusively for the celebration. Hearing the pipes and drums in the darkness was a fantastic way to round off the evening and brought a real sense of Scottish occasion to the start of the birthday celebrations.
It was a wonderful opening to the week, combining an iconic Edinburgh venue with great company, music and some unforgettable moments.
Whisky Tasting and Private Dining at Dewar’s Aberfeldy
The next experience took everyone into the heart of Perthshire for a private visit to Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery.
Whisky is such an important part of Scotland’s history and culture, so it was a lovely way for guests who had travelled from around the world to experience something traditionally Scottish.
The private tour took everyone through the distillery, with whisky tastings along the way and plenty of opportunities to discover more about the whisky-making process.
As a photographer, I particularly enjoy occasions like this, where people are simply enjoying themselves. The conversations, reactions and little exchanges between friends often make for some of the most memorable photographs.
Following the tour, guests enjoyed a private dining experience provided by Ballintaggart, bringing together wonderful Scottish hospitality, food and whisky in a relaxed setting.
Highland Games and Friendly Competition at Stucktaymore
Back at Stucktaymore, the celebrations took a more energetic turn with a day of Highland Games.
With the beautiful Perthshire countryside providing the backdrop, the guests had the opportunity to try their hand at some traditional Scottish sporting challenges.
Tossing the caber, stone throwing, hammer throwing and a good old-fashioned tug of war were all part of the fun, with plenty of encouragement, determination and laughter along the way.
There is something particularly enjoyable about photographing events like this. Once the competition begins, everyone becomes involved, whether they’re taking part themselves or cheering on their friends. From the concentration needed for the throwing events to the teamwork and competitive spirit of the tug of war, there were plenty of wonderful moments to capture.
And with everyone staying together at Stucktaymore, there was a real sense of a shared holiday rather than simply a series of organised events.
Cooking and Cocktail Masterclasses at Ballintaggart
Another day brought a completely different experience, with guests visiting Ballintaggart for cooking and cocktail-making masterclasses.
The group was divided into two, with half learning to prepare a selection of canapés while the others tried their hand at creating cocktails.
It was a wonderfully sociable experience, with everyone getting involved, learning something new and enjoying a little friendly collaboration.
Once both groups had finished, everyone came back together to share what they had made.
The canapés and cocktails were enjoyed together, giving guests the opportunity to appreciate each other’s efforts and enjoy another relaxed occasion in good company.
For me, these are exactly the sorts of experiences that lend themselves to natural documentary photography. Rather than arranging photographs, I could simply capture the interactions, the concentration and the enjoyment as the afternoon unfolded.
Archery and Falconry at Stucktaymore
The celebrations continued at Stucktaymore with another day of outdoor activities, this time featuring archery and falconry.
These were two very different experiences, each offering guests something memorable to enjoy against the backdrop of the Perthshire countryside.
Archery brought opportunities for concentration, determination and a little friendly competition, while the falconry experience offered the chance to get close to some magnificent birds of prey.
From a photography perspective, there was plenty to capture, particularly the reactions of guests as they took part in the activities and shared the experience with friends.
It was another lovely example of how varied the six days had become, with every event offering something different while keeping the emphasis firmly on everyone enjoying their time together.
A Traditional Scottish Finale at Stucktaymore
After six days of wonderful experiences, the celebrations came to a close with a very special final evening at Stucktaymore.
For the occasion, guests hired traditional Highland dress, adding a lovely Scottish character to the evening.
A piper performed the traditional address to the haggis, bringing a little ceremony and theatre to the proceedings before everyone sat down to enjoy a private dinner prepared by a chef.
Following dinner, guests were treated to a Scottish country dancing exhibition, with two dancers performing to the accompaniment of the piper.
It was a fitting conclusion to a week that had embraced so many aspects of Scottish culture, from whisky and Highland Games to music, food and traditional celebrations.
The evening also provided a lovely opportunity to photograph everyone together, enjoying the final moments of what had been a truly memorable birthday experience.
Six Days, Wonderful People and Lasting Memories
What made this particular celebration so special wasn’t simply the remarkable venues or the variety of experiences. It was the opportunity for 28 friends and family members, travelling from different parts of the world, to come together and share six days in Scotland.
From the elegance of the Royal Yacht Britannia to the laughter of the Highland Games and the traditional Scottish finale at Stucktaymore, every day brought something new.
For me, photographing the entire celebration was a real pleasure. Spending several days with the same group meant I could capture the occasion as a complete story, from the bigger moments and spectacular settings to the quieter conversations and spontaneous laughter in between.
These are often the photographs that become particularly meaningful over time, reminding everyone not just of where they went and what they did, but of the people they shared those experiences with.
A wonderful six days in Scotland, and a 40th birthday celebration that I’m sure everyone involved will remember for many years to come.
Although weddings are a large part of what I photograph at Crieff Photography, I also love documenting private celebrations, milestone birthdays and special events across Scotland.
Whether it’s an intimate gathering, an exclusive evening at a remarkable venue or a celebration spread over several days, my approach remains the same: relaxed, natural photography that captures the atmosphere, the people and the moments that make each occasion unique.
If you’re planning a special celebration in Scotland and would like it photographed in a natural, unobtrusive way, I’d love to hear about your plans.
