So why you should have a family photoshoot and why it is great idea to do it outdoors!

You may think that in an age of smartphones, which actually have quite good cameras, why you might choose to invest in a professional family photographer and why it is great to do a shoot outdoors.

Choosing to have a natural light, outdoor family photoshoot rather than in a studio might not sound like a good idea, especially in Scotland, but stick with me! So you may be thinking what if the weather isn’t great on the day that we have booked? Sure we can’t control the conditions and you may have booked months in advance. but we always manage to work with what the Scottish weather has to throw at us!

But, we would highly recommend an outdoor family photography session over a studio shoot for lots of important reason. And here’s why…

Outdoor natural light.

You just can’t beat natural light to capture relaxed  family photos, it is as simple as that. Studio lights try to emulate this, but they are a very poor substitute when it comes to making the photos look more authentic and less posed.

You can choose a location that is special to you.

Let’s be honest, no studio could ever compare to a mountain backdrop or an autumn woodland. So think about where you and your family had a great day out in the country, maybe a favourite walk along a riverbank, or a favourite beach. Even if you are on holiday and don’t know the area, we can always give you lots of suggestions of amazing locations to hold the shoot. We even have a beautiful ‘outdoor-indoor’ space available if you are in the area and weather isn’t being so friendly on the day of your shoot!

It is much more relaxed.

Studio photography can be  very generic and even the largest of rooms can still feel quite tight if you have your extended family with you. So with possibly grandparents, 3 grown up siblings (plus their partners), and their grandchildren, that could be 15 people in the ‘big group photo’, that’s going to be quite cosy in any studio! We just don’t take the standard group family photos, we find that more candid photos are what really reflect everyones personalties, especially the children. There is nothing worse that lots of awkward poses so we can just release the children ‘into the wild’ and let them be their natural inquisitive, adorable and mischievous selves while we capture them just having fun!

The seasons are always changing.

With such a variety of ever changing colours in the seasons of Scotland, no family photoshoots will ever look the same. So embrace the outdoors, find a location that is special to you then relax and have lots of fun while we take your photos!
