A Perthshire Wedding | Murthly Castle

Situated near Dunkeld in Highland Perthshire, Murthly Estate is one hour from the Central Belt, truly rural and Highland in nature. The landscaped grounds around Murthly Castle, together with endless woods, rivers and hills, make the Estate a wonderful place to get married, relax and enjoy the natural surroundings.

The venue is for exclusive use, not only on the wedding day, but also during the set-up period. Ceremonies can take place in the Chapel, the Castle, the Walled Garden or the Douglas fir wood.

The chapel is stunning and an idyllic setting for a highland wedding, so we were delighted to be invited there for the wedding photography of Tom & Ross.

The chapel can seat up to 250 guests, although it is equally suitable for more intimate weddings. Situated in the heart of the estate, with a double row of yew trees on the drive and only a short walk from the castle.

The Castle has two spectacular rooms available for wedding parties of up to 60 people. They overlook the walled garden, which is also open to guests and The Music Room echoes the elegant rococo style of the Palace of Versailles in France. The Victorian Dining Room features walls hung with their original maroon velvet and a hammer-beamed ceiling studded with golden bees.

For larger parties, the wide expanses of lawn in the walled garden ensure plenty of space for a large marquee, leaving the more intimate, colourful parts of the garden free for you and guests to explore.

The main features are the Castle and Chapel. The castle is steeped in history and was originally built as a royal hunting lodge. It is rumoured that Bonnie Prince Charlie took refuge in one of the towers after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745-46. The Chapel of St. Anthony the Eremite dates from the 16th century, the tiled floor, gilded fixtures, stained glass, arched fresco, and hammer-beamed ceiling all make the chapel a very special place for a wedding ceremony.

A Chapel Wedding Ceremony at Murthly Castle

Tom & Ross made the finishing touches to getting ready in the castle before their wedding and they were delighted to greet their guests together as they arrived. Many of their guests still being serving Royal Navy Officers who had travelled from all over the world.

We had lots of time to take candid photos of T&R with their guests before the short stroll down to The Chapel of St. Anthony for the ceremony, the interior of which is truly stunning, with the décor creating a warmth and spirituality only found in old churches.

After the ceremony, a confetti shot with a classic military sword arch then time to meander off to the lawn to pop bottles of fizz at the drinks reception, all blessed in glorious weather!

With 2 photographers we had the advantage of leaving Paula with the guests to capture the candid photos at the drinks reception, while I disappeared with T&R for their couple photographs. There are so many photo opportunities around the estate that doing a pre-wedding photoshoot definitely reaped lots of advantages when choosing which locations to visit.

Following the feature photos, Tom & Ross still had lots of time to spend with their guests at the drinks reception, then to invite everyone for the big group shot and the friends & family photos on the lawn.

After some very heartfelt speeches in the marquee (and interesting stories from the ‘best people’ that made the couple hide behind their hands!), the hearty wedding breakfast was provided by Gourley Events.

Time for the evening celebrations when T&R’s first dance was followed by a very energetic ceilidh and then dancing the night away!

We are so grateful to Tom & Ross for having us as their Murthly Castle wedding photographers, thank you so much for having us as part of your big day!
