Kirsty & Matthew's pre-wedding shoot | Cardney Steading
By Crieff Photography – April 14, 2026
Kirsty and Matthew’s pre-wedding shoot at Cardney Steading was the perfect way to kick off the countdown to their wedding later this September. With a forecast that threatened showers throughout the day, we arrived prepared for the worst—but were met with calm, dry conditions that couldn’t have worked out better.
It was one of those sessions that perfectly highlights why pre-wedding shoots are such a valuable part of the experience—especially when included as part of our two-photographer wedding package.
A Lucky Break with the Weather
Scotland is never predictable when it comes to weather, and this shoot was no exception. The forecast suggested we’d be dodging rain showers all afternoon, but in a welcome twist, the skies stayed clear and gave us the perfect conditions to explore the grounds of Cardney Steading.
The soft, overcast light created a beautiful, natural look for the images—ideal for relaxed, documentary-style photography without harsh shadows or bright sun.

Why Pre-Wedding Shoots Matter
Kirsty and Matthew’s shoot is a great example of why we include a pre-wedding session in our two-photographer package.
It’s not just about the photos (although that’s a big bonus). It’s about getting comfortable in front of the camera, understanding how we work, and building a connection before the wedding day itself.
By the time their September wedding arrives, they’ll already know what to expect—meaning less nerves, more confidence, and more natural, authentic moments captured throughout the day.
Pre-wedding shoots also give couples a chance to slow things down and enjoy being photographed without the time pressures of a wedding timeline.

Exploring Cardney Steading
Cardney Steading provided a fantastic backdrop, with a variety of textures and locations to work with. From rustic stone buildings to open countryside, it allowed us to create a diverse set of images that felt natural and true to Kirsty and Matthew as a couple.
We moved around several spots, keeping things relaxed and informal—focusing on genuine interactions rather than anything overly posed.
A Slight Change of Plans… Thanks to the Swans
Every shoot has its unexpected moments, and this one came in the form of some rather protective resident mute swans.
While they certainly added character to the location, their nesting season meant we had to be mindful of where we could go. After a little unwelcome attention, we made the sensible decision to give them plenty of space and adjust our route.
It’s all part of photographing in the Scottish countryside—and it definitely gave us a story to tell!

Relaxed, Natural & Authentic
Throughout the session, Kirsty and Matthew were brilliant—completely relaxed, up for a laugh, and happy to just enjoy the experience together. That’s exactly what makes a pre-wedding shoot work so well.
The result? Natural, genuine images that reflect who they are, rather than anything forced or staged.
Looking Ahead to September
If this session is anything to go by, Kirsty and Matthew’s wedding at Cardney Steading later this year is going to be something really special. With the connection we’ve already built and the confidence they now have in front of the camera, we’re set up perfectly to capture their day in a relaxed, storytelling way.
