Sarah & Alasdair’s Rainy-Day Wedding Adventure | St Michael’s Church Linlithgow & Kingsfield Barn Wedding

Some weddings are remembered for sunshine and blue skies. Others are remembered for personality, laughter and unforgettable moments — and Sarah & Alasdair’s wedding had all of that and more. From a relaxed morning getting ready at home to a tractor ride to the reception and a group photo taken from potato boxes in the barn due to the weather, their wedding day was full of brilliant, real moments that perfectly reflected them as a couple.

As a husband and wife photography team, having two photographers made it possible to capture every part of their story from different perspectives throughout the day.

A Morning in Two Places – The Advantage of Two Photographers

One of the biggest benefits of booking two wedding photographers is the ability to document the build-up to the ceremony from both sides.

While Paula spent the morning with Sarah capturing the relaxed atmosphere of bridal preparations at home, I headed to St Michael’s Church in Linlithgow to photograph Alasdair and the boys.

Sarah’s morning was full of excitement and anticipation — the kind of moments that often become some of the most treasured photographs from the day. Paula was able to capture the final touches of hair and makeup, the dress being buttoned, and those emotional moments with family before leaving for the ceremony.

Meanwhile at the church, I met up with Alasdair and the groomsmen for a pre-wedding photoshoot with the boys around the historic surroundings of Linlithgow. These relaxed photos of the groom and his friends before guests arrive always add great storytelling to the final wedding gallery.

Having two photographers means no part of the story gets missed, and it creates a much fuller record of the day.

A Beautiful Ceremony at St Michael’s Church, Linlithgow

St Michael’s Church is one of the most impressive ceremony locations in the area, sitting beside Linlithgow Palace and overlooking the loch. The historic architecture and dramatic interior make it a fantastic setting for wedding photography.

As guests arrived and filled the church, the atmosphere built perfectly for Sarah’s entrance down the aisle. Capturing these moments from multiple angles — the bride arriving, the groom’s reaction, and the guests watching — is another reason why having two photographers during the ceremony can make such a difference.

A Tractor Ride to the Reception

After the ceremony came one of the most memorable parts of the day.

Instead of a traditional wedding car, Alasdair drove the couple from the church to the reception in his tractor — a brilliant nod to the family farming background and something completely unique.

The tractor was decorated with a tribute to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, adding a meaningful touch to the journey. Guests loved it, and it created some fantastic, fun photographs as the newlyweds headed off to celebrate.

Kingsfield Barn – A Family Wedding Venue

The reception took place at Kingsfield Barn in Linlithgow, a venue that holds special meaning for Sarah & Alasdair as it is owned by the groom’s family.

Family-run venues always have an extra sense of warmth and personality, and Kingsfield Barn provided the perfect relaxed setting for the celebration. The rustic barn space is ideal for weddings, offering plenty of character and a great atmosphere for speeches, food and dancing.

For couples planning a Linlithgow barn wedding, Kingsfield Barn offers a wonderful countryside feel while still being close to the town.

When the Scottish Weather Has Other Plans

The weather definitely had its own ideas on the day. Heavy rain meant that outdoor couple portraits simply weren’t possible, but that never stops great wedding photography.

Instead, we made the most of the barn’s interior and focused on natural moments throughout the day. Some of the best photographs from weddings often come from these relaxed, unplanned moments rather than staged portraits.

Rainy weddings can actually produce incredibly atmospheric images — and Sarah & Alasdair’s day proved that perfectly.

The Most Precarious Group Photo Ever

Every wedding has its unexpected moments, and this one certainly delivered.

The original plan for the big group photo involved using a cherry picker to get a high view over all the guests gathered outside. Unfortunately, the weather made that impossible and the idea had to be abandoned.

Plan B?

Standing on four stacked potato boxes.

It was definitely one of the more precarious photography setups I’ve experienced, but it worked perfectly and allowed us to capture the full group photo despite the rain. Sometimes wedding photography requires a bit of creativity — and occasionally a strong sense of balance.

Why Two Wedding Photographers Makes a Difference

Sarah & Alasdair’s wedding is a perfect example of how valuable it is to have two photographers documenting your day.

With a husband and wife team we were able to:

• Capture bridal preparations and groom preparations simultaneously
• Photograph multiple angles during the ceremony
• Document guests arriving while preparations continued
• Capture natural moments happening in different places at once
• Tell the complete story of the wedding day

For couples planning a barn wedding in Linlithgow or Scotland, having two photographers ensures that every important moment — big or small — is preserved.

A Wedding Full of Personality

Despite the rain, Sarah & Alasdair’s wedding was full of warmth, laughter and unforgettable moments. From a tractor getaway to balancing on potato boxes for the group photo, it was a day that perfectly reflected their personalities and the people around them.

And at the end of the day, those authentic moments are what wedding photography is really all about.

If you’re planning a Kingsfield Barn wedding, a Linlithgow church ceremony, or a relaxed Scottish countryside celebration, choosing photographers who can capture the full story of your day makes all the difference.

Because sometimes the most memorable weddings are the ones where things don’t quite go to plan — and those are often the best photographs of all.
