Set in the beautiful Perthshire countryside, Crieff Hydro is a wonderful setting for a wedding and a venue we always enjoy returning to.
As wedding photographers based nearby, we know Crieff Hydro and the surrounding area well. From the elegant interiors of the hotel to the gardens, woodland and views towards the Perthshire hills, there are plenty of opportunities for beautiful photographs without taking you away from your guests for too long.
Our approach is always relaxed and natural. We want you to enjoy your wedding day while we capture the atmosphere, the people and all those little moments happening around you.
One of the great things about a Crieff Hydro wedding is the flexibility the hotel offers.
The hotel can accommodate everything from smaller, intimate celebrations to much larger weddings, with several different spaces available for ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening receptions.
The Drawing Room is particularly lovely for an intimate ceremony, while the Ferntower Suite and Melville Hall provide options for larger celebrations.
There’s also the advantage of having accommodation on site, allowing couples, families and guests to enjoy the whole wedding without worrying about travelling elsewhere at the end of the evening.
Why We Love Photographing Weddings at Crieff Hydro
Photographically, Crieff Hydro gives us plenty of variety.
On a good day we can make the most of the gardens and surrounding countryside, with the Perthshire hills providing a beautiful backdrop. There are woodland areas, pathways and quieter corners around the grounds that work wonderfully for relaxed couple photographs.
And because this is Scotland, we always have a plan for the weather.
The interiors of Crieff Hydro give us plenty of alternatives when conditions aren’t cooperating, so rain certainly doesn’t mean sacrificing your wedding photographs.
We also like to keep couple portraits relatively short. Rather than disappearing for an hour, we’d much rather take you away for a relaxed twenty minutes or so and then get you back to your guests.
If the light becomes particularly beautiful later in the day, we can always head outside again for another few photographs.
Why Two Photographers Work So Well at Crieff Hydro
For larger Crieff Hydro weddings, having two photographers can make a real difference.
While Paula photographs the bride and bridal party getting ready, Brian can be elsewhere in the hotel photographing the groom and the boys.
During the ceremony we can photograph from different positions, giving you both perspectives without either of us having to move around unnecessarily.
The same applies during the drinks reception. While one of us concentrates on family photographs or spends a little time with the newlyweds, the other can continue photographing guests and all the spontaneous moments happening elsewhere.
It means you receive a much more complete photographic story of your wedding day.
Jenny & Jon’s Crieff Hydro Wedding
Jenny and Jon’s wedding was a lovely example of just how relaxed a wedding at Crieff Hydro can be.
One of the more unusual parts of their day was their decision to have a first look before the ceremony.
Rather than waiting until Jenny walked down the aisle, they chose to see each other beforehand and spend a little time together away from everyone else.
It was a wonderfully personal moment to photograph and also gave us the opportunity to capture some relaxed portraits before the ceremony had even begun.
A Relaxed Afternoon at Crieff Hydro
After the ceremony, Jenny and Jon could simply enjoy being with their family and friends while we concentrated on documenting what was happening around them.
That’s an important part of the way we photograph weddings.
Of course we’ll organise the family groups and create beautiful portraits of the two of you, but we don’t want your wedding to become a photoshoot. Some of our favourite photographs come from the moments in between — conversations, laughter, hugs and reactions that can’t be planned.
Later in the day, we took Jenny and Jon for photographs around the gardens and grounds of Crieff Hydro.
The combination of mature trees, open countryside and views towards the hills gave us plenty of variety while keeping everything close to the hotel.
Making the Most of the Evening Light
One of our favourite things to do at Crieff Hydro is keep an eye on the light as the day progresses.
Rather than trying to create every portrait immediately after the ceremony, we’ll often suggest going outside again after dinner if the weather and light are particularly good.
That’s exactly what we did with Jenny and Jon.
Later in the day we headed back outside for another short portrait session. The softer light gave their evening photographs a completely different feeling from those we’d taken earlier.
It only took a few minutes and then they were straight back to their celebration.
